Why I prefer the Ricoh GR III to the Fujifilm x100VI

Fujifilm just released the newest version of their legendary x100 line, the x100VI. According to preliminary sales data, they’ve been flying off the shelves. When you look at the specs sheet, its not hard to see why. Fujifilm managed to take the beloved x100V and make it even better. If you want a review of the x100VI, you’ll find 1,000 of them on other websites. In this post, I want to tell you why I, as a photographer, still prefer the Ricoh GR III to the x100VI.

Luke’s Kodak Ektachrome 1600 - Film Simulation for Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx

Bonjour everyone! Enjoy this new Ricoh GR III Recipe! This film simulation works with the GR III and the GR IIIx.

Today’s new Ricoh GR III Recipe is called Luke’s Kodak Ektachrome 1600

This is the first film simulation where I’ve experimented with setting a manual ISO value. As you probably guessed, that value is ISO 1600. The elevated ISO certainly kept my shutter speeds high.

Kodak Magenta Chrome - Film Simulation for Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx

I’m back this week with another Ricoh GR III (and GR IIIx) film simulations. In my never ending pursuit to create a Kodak Portra 400 recipe, I was doing some experimenting, and came up with what I’m calling Kodak Magenta Chrome. Admittedly, the recipe isn’t that close to Porta, but that is ok.

Pastel Film 400 - Film Recipe for Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx

This is a new film simulation for the Ricoh GR III (and GR IIIx). I created Pastel Film 400 using the pre-installed Negative Film Preset. It features low contrast and mid-high saturation. My favorite thing about this film recipe is how it renders blue colors. Blues are captured in a pastel pallet. Deeper blues are lightened, bringing an overall softness to the images.

Natural Analog - Film Simulation for Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx

This is a new film simulation for the Ricoh GR III (and GR IIIx). You can install the preset settings into your Ricoh and shoot JPEGs with a similar look. Interestingly, you can also use these recipes as LUTs. Although I don’t recommend the Ricoh GR for video, it can be nice in a pinch. The recipes act as LUTs when the Ricoh is put into video mode. This film simulation was created using the famous Positive Film picture profile. I dropped the saturation and the contrast and over-exposed the images a bit more than the standard profile. I’m calling this simulation Natural Analog.

Ethereal Film 200 - Film Simulation for Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx

This is a new film simulation for the Ricoh GR III (and GR IIIx). I created this recipe from the Bleach Bypass picture profile. I live in an extremely sunny country and most of my photography is done in harsh sun of mid-day and early afternoon. I wanted to make a film simulation which captured the haze of the late summer sun in North Africa and this one fit the bill.

Ricoh GR III - My Thoughts After 5,000 Photos

I’m a Ricoh fan because they created a great product that fits my needs. I went from an unconvinced hesitant buyer to a proud evangelistic Ricoh owner, and I think that is some of the highest praise you can give to a device. The Ricoh GR iii is good at completing the job for which it was built. It captures moments of time I will be able to look back on and cherish in future years. It is a constant companion and trustworthy friend… and who can ask for more than that?!

Blueberry Film 400 - New Film Recipe for Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx

I was determined to create a recipe using the built in Cross-Process picture profile as a base. I’ve never been fond of Cross-Process but I thought I would give it a try anyway. I adjusted the picture profile to the magenta setting, made a few tweaks to the contrast and shading, and then took my Ricoh out on the streets of Athens, Greece.

Negative Film GOLD - New Film Recipe on Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx

This week I developed a film simulation for the Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx. I used the new Negative Film picture profile Ricoh just released with Firmware 1.7 and tweaked it slightly. I input a custom white balance, added some saturation, and shifted the colors towards the warm magentas. I’ve entitled this recipe Negative Film Gold.
